Trump Says He Is ‘Pretty Happy’ With Russia’s Limited Role in Iran Conflict
WASHINGTON, October 22, 2026 — US President Donald Trump has said he is satisfied with Russia’s decision not to become more deeply involved in the conflict with Iran, arguing that Moscow’s limited participation has helped preserve diplomatic efforts to end the war in Ukraine.
Speaking about ongoing negotiations with Russia, Trump said his administration was “pretty happy” that Moscow had not significantly intervened in support of Tehran. He also noted that China had played a more limited role than it potentially could have, describing both countries’ restraint as an important factor in the broader geopolitical situation.
Trump claimed that Iran’s military capabilities had been severely weakened, asserting that its air defence systems and other military assets had suffered extensive damage. He also pointed to the country’s economic difficulties, particularly inflation and the weakening of its currency, although the figures and assessments he cited were not independently verified in the remarks.
The US president said he did not want to take actions that could disrupt negotiations aimed at ending the war in Ukraine. He argued that escalating tensions with Russia could jeopardise diplomatic progress and interfere with other sensitive negotiations, including efforts to secure the release of an individual he referred to as Stephen.
Trump defended his approach against criticism from political opponents who, he said, had urged him to take more aggressive action. He suggested that such measures could have undermined negotiations and prolonged the situation rather than producing a favourable outcome.
The president also said Russia and China could have provided Iran with substantially greater support but had instead limited their involvement. According to Trump, both countries would prefer to see the conflict settled, creating an opportunity for diplomatic engagement.
Trump added that Washington was continuing discussions with Moscow over the Ukraine war, while China was also involved in the wider diplomatic process. His remarks underscored the administration’s effort to balance pressure on Iran with negotiations involving major international powers.
The comments highlight the complex relationship between the conflicts involving Iran and Ukraine, as Washington seeks to limit escalation while pursuing diplomatic solutions. However, Trump’s characterisation of Iran’s military condition, economic figures and the extent of Russian and Chinese involvement should be distinguished from independently verified assessments.
